Vision for the project:

For this project, I wanted to create a drinkable potion of confusion, taking inspiration from the Harry Potter Universe's "Befuddlement Draught". I liked this potion effect as it was unique and had lots of potential options for the design, hence I wanted to created something which matches the idea of "confusing" for the potion design.

Production Process:

At the start of the project, I created a mood board, establishing my ideas so I knew exactly what to do when I began modelling. I came to the design to make a twisting bottle shape, and the liquid inside would be a pearlescent colour.

My next step was to create a low-poly version of the potion bottle. After that, I duplicated the low-poly version, and then retopologized it to be of a higher poly count. I did this for the glass, bottle base, and the cork. Once the higher poly versions were made, I focussed more on the base of the bottle. I had decided in my mood board that I would like to create some decorative ornate designs within the base of the bottle, and that is the next thing that I created, taking reference from an image that I found online.

After the high-poly version of my potion bottle had been created, I UV mapped out all of the parts of the bottle, as the next item on the agenda was to texture the potion bottle. I imported the meshes into Substance Painter and began painting the potion bottle material, as well as applying the materials to the bottle base and the cork. Equally at this stage, I baked the high-poly version of the potion bottle onto the low poly version, this is so that I could carry the design of the high-poly bottle, onto the low-poly without having to make the bottle more detailed.

Once the texturing process was completed, I imported the meshes and materials back into maya, where I created a backdrop and rendered images of my potion bottle, using a HDRI to project lighting onto the bottle.

In total my potion bottle was 4,000 tris.

Results:

My grade for this project was a First.

I was really happy with the final product of this module, the potion bottle that I made met all of the criteria stated, and I feel like I both learnt a lot about 3D modelling, as well texturing assets.
