Vision for the project:
My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed speedrunning games, so we thought a fitting game for us to make would be "The Speedrun Game". The idea of this game was to traverse each level as quickly as possible, and climb your way up the leader-board with the quickest time.
Achievements
I created a modular script, which was used for each of the levels. It included the time, personal best time, the reset mechanic and how to manage obstacles that may be found on the route. I also had to use level design in each of the in game levels to create a flowing and strategic feel to each level.
Favourite part
My favourite part of this project was designing all of the cosmetics and VFX trails. As I had complete creative freedom within this game, I ended up spending a larger portion on my time creating some really cool looking VFX trails, which would follow you in game. These were purchasable with the currency rewarded from completing a run on each level.
Challenges I faced
One challenge that was faced was actually after game publish. We quickly realised that players weren't sure on how the game worked. To fix this, we made a 10 step tutorial level that the players have to complete after logging into the game for the first time. In this tutorial, we had UI popups which explained each mechanic in a step by step method.
Results
This project ended up being incredibly fun to make as I had to use lots of different skills that I had learnt previously to put it all together. We also managed to publish this game which was very exciting to watch.
